Excerpt from Marina: A Dramatic Romance, Being the Shakespearian Portion of the Tragedy of 'Pericles' It may seem, at first sight, unnecessary to reprint separately the Shakespearian scenes of Pericles, since that play is to be found in every modern edition of the poet. But this all-too-brief story of Pericles and his lost wife and daughter, as it flashes out here and there amidst the sordid and offensive pages of what Ben Jonson justly called a 'mouldy tale, ' is, at the best, a gem vilely set. Removed from surroundings with which it has no real affinity, and from which it is capable of entire separation, it assumes a less fragmentary form, and becomes, not a finished whole, it is true, but still a complete sketch; not a play, perhaps, but a perfect dramatic poem, which takes its place naturally and inevitably side by side with the romances of Shakespeare's last period. This redaction will also, it is hoped, enable the reader to see more clearly that nowhere else has Shakespeare maintained so high a level of pure poetry through so many consecutive scenes.
