It follows her 2003 album Worldwide Underground and a hiatus from recording music. Communicating with several hip hop producers over the Internet, Badu conceived the album through the GarageBand software program on her laptop, which led to the album's primary recording sessions at Electric Lady Studios in New York City. An esoteric concept album, New Amerykah Part One features social commentary and impersonal lyrics, with subject matter that includes poverty, urban violence, complacency, and cultural identity. It features dense, stylistically-varied music that incorporates funk, soul, and hip hop genres. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 123,884 copies in its first week. It produced three singles and has sold 359,000 copies in the United States. Upon its release, New Amerykah Part One received general acclaim from music critics. The album was ranked in the top-10 of various critics and publications' year-end lists of best albums in 2008.
