I had heard the terrain was challenging, and I was excited. #2 I had always loved caving, and was obsessed with the idea of cave diving. I was able to overcome the obstacles in and out of water, and the sport felt exciting. But when I went to the much-hyped challenges of Swildon’s Hole’s second sump, it wasn’t as dangerous as I had been told. #3 I was interested in cave diving, a form of exploration that involves swimming underwater tunnels and caverns. I understood that calm thought was needed for a diver to function effectively, especially because the world in which they were operating was similar to the Death Zone on a mountain such as K2, where a lack of oxygen strains the major organs. #4 Cave diving is a type of exploration that involves moving through a dark and mysterious world, some of which can only be accessed by diving into water. It is a means to an end, and the discovery of new passages is the aim.
