In the second part Jaffery enters the narrative directly and his romantic choices begin to disrupt the lives around him. Friendship is tested and love is strained between idealism and consequence under the lingering shadow of war. Hilary moves from detached observer to emotional participant in Jaffery’s fate. This section completes the novel by confronting the cost of romantic freedom and the responsibilities left in war’s aftermath.
