MASSTRANSISCOPE is a public artwork created in 1980 by Bill Brand in the New York City subway tunnel that animates when seen from passing trains. It consists of 228 hand-painted panels viewed through a series of vertical slits set into a specially constructed housing. The piece works on the principle of the zoetrope, a 19th century optical toy. MASSTRANSISCOPE FLIP BOOK, based on another 19th century optical toy, provides a similar experience to the artwork in the subway in the form of a book. MASSTRANSISCOPE FLIP BOOK shows the original artwork's hand-painted panels set in motion when the reader flips through the book's pages. This flip book was published in conjunction with the exhibition GHOSTS IN THE GARDEN Court Tree Collective Brooklyn, New York June 14 - July 19, 2025 122 pages, 6 x 4 inches, © Bill Brand 2025
