While fishing beneath a remote mountain waterfall, the narrator meets a mysterious woman who has “lost her way” in “The Yamame Story” (yamame: a mountain trout). “The Mount Fuji Story” recounts a life-threatening ordeal on a snowy ascent-survival that felt nothing short of divine protection. In “The Train Story,” repeated passenger quarrels erupt-always on the very train the narrator rides-until the bustle of commuting reveals itself as a stage for chance encounters.
Gathering fifteen tales in all, this collection captures uncanny, real-life experiences at the boundary of people and the natural world.
