It was given to the apostle Paul by divine revelation, and by him it was named the Lord's Supper. It was designed not only to commem orate the Saviour's death, but to ratify his covenant with his people in the most solemn and impressive manner. Ancient Oriental tribes entering into a covenant that never could be broken, signed and sealed it with their own blood and the covenant of our Lord was sealed with his life-blood, of which the Memorial service is to be the reminder and of which the element of the cup is to be the em blem till he come. And what is this new covenant? For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel\ after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, me a people: For I will be merciful to their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. In giving the cup to his disciples Jesus said: This is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many, which is shed for you, for the remission of sins. In the eyes of his disciples, it was intended solemnly to confirm and make valid every divine promise. Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
