Durga Pooja celebrations in my memory, since I can remember, as a little girl, gave me a sense of pride and jubilation. The huge idols of Goddess Durga in all her finery with her ashta bhuja, a symbol of power, reminds me of my mother multitasking in her varied roles. Times have changed and so have circumstances. Women so respected in every era had to take a backseat, but the goddess in her plays her part befittingly. Every phase of her life is like the nine days of the Durga Navratri, with celebrations bringing with it, her spirit of a strong homemaker, loving wife, and a mother through her compassion and her uprightness. The attributes of the goddess are passed on from generation to generation by every mother to her daughter, with pride. She teaches her to be true to her convictions in the face of adversities.
