Isis Gullette is a first-time author but a true poet at heart. Isis has been writing poetry & screenplays since she was 13 and 15, respectively. She is also an award-winning screenwriter and director, with her films premiering at festivals such as the National Film Festival for Talented Youth, CineYouth Film Festival, LA Student Film Festival, and more. I Was Born Hungry is a poetry chapbook created by Isis Gullette, a 19-year-old Black poet, filmmaker, and screenwriter chronicling her journey with sexuality, self-expression, and most importantly- hunger. In 26 poems, Isis touches on socially relevant themes like climate change, police brutality, desperation, lust for power, and many more. She paints a portrait of a young woman shaped and molded by her boundless desires from birth and the aftereffects that come with relentless ambition. I Was Born Hungry is a testimonial to all the different iterations of hunger: sexual and intellectual hunger to pure hunger for life and love. In this in-depth look at longing, Isis forces the reader to look into a mirror to examine how their own hunger has shaped their lives.
