...but that's not me. is a non-fiction book drawing attention to the realities of domestic abuse. It captures one woman's journey into, through, and out of domestic abuse intertwined with the stories of many others while walking the reader through the various categories and types of abuse, how abuse happens, when and how to leave, and the aftermath. The book concludes with resources and additional tools for victims as well as allies, those supporting victims through abusive situations. Although the primary audience of the book is female victims of abuse by a romantic partner, ...but that's not me. touches on multiple forms of abuse. Additionally, the principles are relevant for all forms of relationships and victims of both genders. The intention of the book is to increase awareness of modern domestic abuse and give victims the language they need to recognize abuse in all forms and make conscious, educated decisions about their own relationships. This is not a book designed to tell victims what to do with their relationships but to even the playing field for abuse victims. For decades, we have been giving abusers a handbook of abuse. We have taught them how to do it better, smarter, and longer. We have taught them to be con artists in their lives and within their relationships. This book is not about changing the abusers but arming their victims with knowledge and reminding them of their complete and total worthiness. We are arming them with knowledge and encouraging them to reclaim their lives. It is only through breaking the silence that we can begin to change the story for ourselves, our children, and the future of women around the world.
