Leaving poverty in Kentucky, young Taylor heads west. Along the way she picks up an abandoned Native American child, Turtle. The little girl has been abused and is silent and withdrawn. They settle in Tucson and with the help of new friends Taylor is able to build a good life for herself and the child.
