October 1940 and Beth Shanks knows she must keep her chin up. Beth is eighteen-years-old, her dad is away at the war and Beth helps suppoort her family. Catherine Shanks is a trained pianist and cannot understand why her daughter will not learne to read music, even though Beth can play by ear all the popular songs. Beth's boyfriend, Irish lad Thomas Sullivan comes under suspicion when rumour break that an Irish national has been spying for the Germans. When air raids force Beth and her family into the shelters, she belts out old favourites on an abandoned piano. Connie finally sees the joy her daughter's music can bring, but she is unaware that it will one day save their lives............
