Excerpt from Beatrice Cenci On leaving Corsica, Guerrazzi settled in Florence, and for a time he was occupied with the practice of law. When the revolution of 1848 broke out, he was one of its moving spirits, and was again imprisoned for a short time. As soon as he was released, he joined the party of Mazzini, Gioberti, and other revolutionists, founded a republican newspaper in Florence, was elected deputy to the national assembly of Tuscany, and on the fall of the Capponi cabinet was appointed Minister of the In terior After the flight of the Grand Duke, in the same year, when the Italian duchies were republican ized, Guerrazzi became dictator of the temporary gov ernment, which one month later was overthrown.
