Miss Fletcher's War is a Fringe Theatre piece, set in the late 1960s in a primary school. A small group of children are reacting to the behaviour of the class bully by trying to bully him back. Miss Fletcher, a retired teacher, is brought it to see if she can help to resolve the situation, through the telling of stories. Initially, she tries to engage them using a fairytale. As the situation gets worse, she starts telling stories from the life of Lilly, a young nurse in the First World War.

本作は、一見静かな六〇年代の教室を舞台に、人間の根源的な暴力性と再生を「物語の力」で描き出す、魂を揺さぶる戯曲です。いじめの連鎖という闇に対し、老教師が語る第一次世界大戦の過酷な記憶は、単なる説教を超えた圧倒的なリアリティを放ちます。著者のガイ・ジョーンズは、おとぎ話が通用しない現実の残酷さを突きつけつつ、そこに真の救いを見出す文学的強度を見事に提示しています。 特筆すべきは、戦時下の看護師リリーの壮絶な半生が、子供たちの心を揺さぶり、変容を促していくカタルシスです。歴史という鏡を通じて「敵」への眼差しを問い直す本作は、言葉が持つ魔法と、痛みを分かち合うことで得られる赦しを鮮烈に描き出します。短くも濃密な対話の中に、人間の尊厳が輝く珠玉の傑作です。
