The tale begins with Mustafa of Mudge, whose ambitions cast a shadow over Oz. Through the magic circus and Mustafa’s decree, two lion hunters set the stage for the Cowardly Lion’s trials. Strange doors and escapes test his courage and push him onto a quest for bravery. His search expands into distant lands in pursuit of a truly brave man. The first part concludes with curious adventures on the Isle of Un and a bizarre fishing expedition, building anticipation for greater trials.
