The people of Myanmar have fallen into a desperate situation due to pressure from the military coup d'état that started in 2021. Look-ing at what has been going on in this ruined country, rather than anger, I feel sadness. In 2017 when I was 68 years old, I lived for a year in the second largest city, Mandalay, as a senior volunteer for JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency). It was the year after Aung Sun Suu Kyi had won the 2016 election and started a democratic government. Looking back on it now, until the coup d'état in 2021 there was a brief period when the dreams of the ordinary people came true. This is a record of what I saw and felt in the middle of this period of change in Myanmar society. The people of Myanmar are similar to Japanese : calm and friendly. By introducing their lives and society, and the background to the seeds of social unrest, I pray that they can return to peace as soon as possible.
