"The Haunted Tape – How the US military used ghosts to fight the Viet Cong" reveals the eerie details of "Operation Wandering Soul." In Vietnamese culture, the unburied dead are believed to wander aimlessly in pain. US Army psychological operations (Psy-Ops) engineers created "Ghost Tape Number 10," a terrifying audio recording of a ghostly voice moaning, calling for his family, and warning his living comrades to go home or face death. Historian Victor Ghost recounts how helicopters blasted this tape over the jungle at night. The sound was so realistic and culturally targeted that it not only terrified the enemy but also spooked the South Vietnamese allies and American soldiers who weren't in on the plan. "The Haunted Tape" is a story of weaponized folklore. It explores the ethics and effectiveness of using a people's deepest spiritual fears against them, creating a horror movie in real life to break the enemy's will.
