Excerpt from The Truth-Tellers: A Novel Miss Mortimer came leisurely down the broad and handsome staircase of her London house, which was one of the pleasantest in that delightful old spot which is almost rebuilt now and which we call Hans Place. Miss Mortimer's house was one of the newly built ones, a handsome, red-brick mansion as to the outside, a spacious, roomy, and elegant abode as to its interior. The time was dull November. Outside, the air was thick and heavy with fog; within, Miss Mortimer's careful servants had turned up the electric light, and as she came down the spacious stairway she was greeted by the rich glow of a blazing fire which illumined the hall. "A dreadful morning, James," she remarked, as she passed into the beautiful dining-room. "It is, ma'am. I think we're going to 'ave a thoroughly foggy day," was James' sedate reply.
