ON FEBRUARY 2, 1982, Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) arrested Abdul-Kareem As-Salafi, also known as 'Kay', along with his co-defendants, Jack Jamison, who came to be known by the FBI as "J'Love", Larry Hobbs, Michael Stevens and others by way of an arrest warrant and indictment. The arrests occurred following a meeting of the men, which had been recorded and videotaped by the FBI.On February 17, 1982, the Honorable United States Magistrate Judge, Karen S. Brown, held a pre-trial 'Bail, Detention and Probable Cause' hearing. Kay sat at the Defense table in the Courtroom alongside his co-defendants, Jack and Larry, and their team of attorneys, who were the very best legal team in Philadelphia. Kay was dressed in a dark blue, ten-thousand dollar, Felumora suit with matching dark blue Ralph Angels handcrafted alligator shoes. This was the first time he had ever slipped into them and he looked even more dapper than his overpriced team of attorneys. Kay had this aura about himself that all law enforcement agencies hated and took as a personal affront.At this hearing, the Court heard testimony from Michael Stevens, a cooperating witness for the government who was a longtime friend of Kay's, and who played a major role within the business. He testified that he had been threatened throughout the conspiracy by certain co-defendants. The Court also listened to audio and viewed videotapes of meetings dating back three years, to 1979.The United States Attorney, Jackie Matthew, was a beautiful woman in her mid-thirties, but who looked as if she had just graduated from law school. Time had sure treated her kindly. Jackie stood and addressed the Court, "Your Honor, with the nature and seriousness of the offenses charged in this indictment," she said with confidence, "a scheme, your honor, to divert at least ten-million dollars from various Wall Street financial institutions to personal bank accounts and, ultimately, transferred to overseas ban acc..."
