Dad's War is a pictorial history of my father's experiences in the European theater of World War II. Howard J Francis Jr was a Technical Sargent and member of the US Army 2nd Museum and Medical Arts Service (nicknamed the MAMAS), who were responsible for photographing and cataloging the US Army's medical practices overseas. By a twist of fate the 2nd MAMAS became involved in the top-secret procurement of whole blood in preparation for the D-Day invasion of Normandy. A stroke of luck had provided Dad with a jeep, nicknamed Lady Chatterley, and driver, and once on the continent they followed the allied army field hospitals as they moved westward towards Berlin. The narrative of Dad's War tells the engrossing story of the critical mission to find enough whole blood to make D-Day a success, while Dad's never-before published pictures illustrate World War II from the perspective of a medical photographer.
