Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse. His mother managed to cast a glance at him and died; Before the boy was nine years old, he could not find out who his parents were.Not a single affectionate word, not a single affectionate glance had ever illuminated his dull infant years, he knew only hunger, beatings, bullying and deprivation.
