Near the beginning of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Link learns that everyone he knew, excluding Zelda, Impa and members of Zora's realm, has passed away. As a result of this, Hyrule was also in ruins. Link is forced to face this dilemma when he fails to contain the darkness. As Link travels around the world, he remembers his past by looking at the various landscapes. Link believed that everyone in his world except Zelda, Impa and the Zora people were dead. In fact, most of Hyrule had died as well. This was because the darkness could not be sealed; Link's only option was to deal with the situation while trying to fix the mistake. He traveled to different cities, comparing their current landscapes to what he remembered about them in hopes of finding some clues. People viewed Link as a loser due to his ongoing efforts to regain his memory. In Breath of the Wild, players hear Link walking around often; they can also hear animals and wind in the environment. Alternatively, players can ride horses while exploring the game's world. The sounds of birds and foliage are the main focus of the game's audio team. Link's footsteps and other sounds found in the environment are important to include in the audio experience since they're present throughout the entire game. Although Link can move quickly while running or walking, the noises he makes when doing so provide useful details about his present location. These include the sound of his shoes on the ground, as well as the sounds of his feet in motion. Additionally, it's possible to discern Link's location based on the type of surface he moves across and the level of camoumnade he displays. Wakai stated that Foley used recordings to represent different sounds best. His recordings also demonstrated specific sounds for each weapon and shield that Link shakes on his back depending on his level of secrecy. This isn't necessary for a good experience, but it adds to the immersion in a way that other Nintendo games have not.
