The Oneness of God

The confession of the one true God lies at the very heart of divine revelation. From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture consistently proclaims that Yahweh God is one-the eternal, self-existent, and unchanging God who alone is the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer of all things. This truth is declared in the Shema שְׁמַע, the foundational confession of Israel's faith: "Hear, O Israel: Yahweh our God, Yahweh is one" (Deuteronomy 6:4, LSB). In these sacred words, divine oneness is not presented as mere numerical simplicity but as the living revelation of God's indivisible being-the One who is love, life, and light. His oneness embraces all His works and ways, for the same God who created the heavens and the earth has revealed Himself in Jesus Christ and now abides in us by His Holy Spirit. Throughout the biblical narrative, the revelation of the Father, the Word (λόγος), and the Spirit unfold not as three separate beings, but as the living manifestation of the one God's eternal life and operation. In creation, redemption, and sanctification, Scripture portrays the Father as acting through His Word and by His Spirit. The Father is the eternal Source of all; the Word is His self-revelation; and the Spirit is His life and the breath of life, His presence and power. Together, they reveal the fullness of the divine being-one essence (οὐσία), eternally existent in the communion (κοινωνία) of love. The mystery of divine oneness, therefore, is not static simplicity but living unity-a dynamic communion of the Father, His Word, and His Spirit. From creation to redemption, from the prophets to the apostles, the same divine life is revealed: the Father's will accomplished through the Word and made effective by the Spirit. In every divine act, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one in essence, will, and love. This book approaches the mystery of the The Oneness of God not through speculative reasoning but through biblical revelation. Its purpose is not to redefine doctrine but to rediscover its scriptural foundation-to see within the pages of the Bible itself how the one Yahweh reveals Himself as Father, Word, and Spirit. The aim is to affirm that the Christian confession of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit is not a departure from monotheism but its deepest fulfillment-the revelation of the living God. The title, The Oneness of God: A Biblical Perspective, reflects this vision: a return to the living testimony of the prophets and apostles who proclaimed one God-the same Yahweh revealed as Father, through His eternal Word, and by His Holy Spirit. In exploring this mystery, the following chapters seek not to define what transcends comprehension but to contemplate what God has revealed of Himself: His unity in essence, His distinction in relation, and His communion in love. The Father remains the Source and Fountain of all; the Word (λόγος), His eternal self-expression; and the Holy Spirit, His abiding presence and power. Yet the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit reveal the same Yahweh-the one true God who was, and is, and is to come. The same God who said, "Let Us make man in Our image" (Genesis 1:26) is the One revealed in Jesus Christ, who declared, "He who has seen Me has seen the Father" (John 14:9), and in whom "all the fullness of Deity dwells bodily" (Colossians 2:9). Through Him, the Father poured out His Spirit upon the world so that humanity might share in His divine life. Thus, "the Oneness of God" is the revelation of divine love-eternal, personal, and life-giving. May these reflections lead every reader to deeper worship of the one true God-the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit-to whom belong all glory and praise forever. "For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen" (Romans 11:36).
