This novel tells the story of Gaius Valerius Valens, the young son of Lucius and Domitilla. Born in Roman Africa, Valerius grows up working alongside his father in the forge, becoming a skilled blacksmith. At sixteen, he enlists in the Third Legion Augusta, following in the footsteps of his father, who once served under Julius Caesar in Gaul. Under the command of Proconsul Lucius Cornelius Balbus, the legion sets out to explore the territories south of the Roman colonies, encountering the Berber people known as the Garamantes, ruled by the ruthless King Abane. The advance stalls amid ambushes and the harsh trials of the desert. Valerius rises through the ranks, becoming the general's trusted aide and facing increasingly dangerous missions. The Romans forge an alliance with Prince Kateb, leader of the rebellion against Abane. After fierce battles and countless perils, the legion reaches Garama, the enemy capital, where Valerius and Kateb devise a daring plan to seize the city by surprise. Their bold strike succeeds, Kateb is crowned king, and Valerius earns the rank of centurion and a well-deserved rest.
