Sally Weathers is an advertising executive who had just gotten out of a miserable marriage. Thinking that it was over, she gets a visit from her ex who wants to take her house away, but her neighbors come by to keep her from making a huge mistake. They suggest that she take a vacation to forget about him, so she decides to visit France. She meets several people who live by their own rules, including a person with a sordid past named Jean-Pierre Girardon who gives Sally a tour of Paris and Normandy, along with his wife. While visiting Versailles, Sally runs into Jean-Pierre's past when she meets his 'employer': a mobster who calls himself l'Araignee, the Spider. After a brief fight with his gunmen, Jean-Pierre escapes with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Sally convinces him to follow her to America so that his shoulder could heal properly.
