"Kat Godeu," translated as "Battle of the Trees," is an archaic Middle Welsh poem attributed to the Taliesin persona. It contains one of the oldest literary references to Arthur as a person famous in legend and myth. Over the centuries Arthur has taken on many forms. He has been the invincible battlefield warrior, the idyllic medieval king, and the Arthur of romance. Historians have long discussed the question of whether or not he was once a real-life figure from history. Some chronicled historical military leaders have been examined as possible suitable models for a historical Arthur, but the overall consensus is that there is no evidence that Arthur was a real person. The question then becomes "How did the Arthurian legend begin?" In all probability Arthur was derived from some archaic source or prototype that existed before the Arthur of folklore. This reading suggests that Arthur's image in "Battle of the Trees" is patterned after Aeneas, the mythical hero of Troy and Rome.
