Genealogical history of the author's family can be traced back to the 10th century A.D. His earliest known ancestor, Purushottama Dutta, was one of the five Kayastha clans that migrated from Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, to Bally in South-West Bengal. Five Brahmin clans were also part of this group invited by the legendary King Adisur to assist him in strengthening his administration & re-establishing the Vedic religion. In the 14th century, A.D. Tekari Dutta, 12th in line from Purushottama, moved from Bally to an area known at that time as the Muzaffarpur Pargana. He purchased a considerable amount of real estate to become the first zamindar of the region. This place located in present-day Howrah district later acquired several names like Chandul, Mohiary, and Andul. The Nabab awarded him the hereditary title of "Chowdhury", which has variations in English spelling such as "Chaudhury", "Chaudhuri", "Chowdhuri", and "Chaudhary". The famous Kolkata-based "Dutta Family of Hatkhola" was the first major offshoot around the 17th century A.D. Other offshoots have spread elsewhere in India and abroad. The book is based on data from two older books written by the family's ancestors, other referenced documents, and information gathered from family members. It includes family tree charts covering about 27 generations.
