Ding Wenyu is a spoilt university professor in a sterile marriage, caught in a cycle of drinking and debauchery. He falls in love with Yuyuan and publicly professes his love for her - to great ridicule from others. As Japanese troops invade Nanjing, Yuyuan's marriage crumbles and she turns to Ding.
