Excerpt from Das Wirtshaus Im Spessart: Märchen The good fortune which crowned his successive ventures in literature confirmed Hauff in his new vocation, and another work was quickly planned and published. This was the time, it must be remembered, when the whole civilised world was resounding with the fame of the Waverley Novels; and it was only natural that a young and ambitious writer, flushed with recent successes, should be tempted to do for his fatherland what Walter Scott had so brilliantly achieved in revealing to his countrymen the life and manners of the Scottish Highlanders. The outcome of this attempt, Lz'efitenstez'n (an episode in the history of Wijrtemberg in the beginning of the sixteenth century), though but moderately successful, is the only one among the legion of German imitations of Walter Scott that has retained its hold on the reading public down to the present day.
