What is the elderly New Orleanian Maybell Johnson to do when a stranger breaks into her house to take her life? Why not lock him in a dog cage, rant about her darkness, and find redemption and catharsis in the process? Maybell is a bit of a curmudgeon with a soft spot for her rescued mutt, Camille. Maybell has a secret past that caused her to grow dark when she was younger. Her relationship with her husband, Ronald, kept that darkness at bay until his passing fifteen years ago. Since his death, it has grown stronger than before. Joseph Lee Caruso flew in from Texas to kill Maybell's irritating neighbor, Dorthy Gadfly, and now he must escape and kill Maybell, too. While police and reporters hound Maybell to find out what happened to Gadfly, Joseph unwittingly becomes a cathartic vessel for Maybell to purge her darkness. The evenly matched Joseph and Maybell are both in danger of losing their lives. Not only because of their disdain for one another, but also because of a more dangerous threat-and she is rapidly approaching New Orleans.
