Debra-Ann Hunter, a grandmother nearing the end of her life, reflects on her journey from Mississippi to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, starting at the age of fourteen with her two-year-old brother in 1943. With the guidance of two angels assigned to gather her courageous soul, she relives the joys, trials, and tribulations of her life. She recalls being taught how to shoot, hunt, and fish by her beloved grandfather, as well as the two years spent in an orphanage with her brother. Debra-Ann later enrolls in nursing school, where she confronts racial discrimination and sexual harassment while striving to become a nurse and secure a job before an adoptive family is found for her brother. Despite her wariness of men, she eventually falls in love with Kevin Hunter, a young Black police officer, and they marry. Her sons and grandchildren have become agents of change in the world. Yet there is still One Last Prayer from the Queen.
