UPON THIS ROCK The Revelation and Foundation of Christ's Church "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." - Matthew 16:18 (KJV) These words, spoken by Jesus in Caesarea Philippi, are among the most defining statements in all of Scripture. In them, Christ reveals both His identity and His intention: to build a Church that nothing in hell or on earth can destroy. The setting was significant. Caesarea Philippi was a region filled with idolatry, shrines to false gods, and even a cave believed by the locals to be the "gates of Hades." Against this backdrop, Jesus boldly declared that His Church would stand, grow, and prevail-not on human strength, not on cultural traditions, and not on shifting philosophies, but upon the unshakable revelation of who He is: the Christ, the Son of the living God. The Church Is Christ's Idea The Church was not man's invention. It is not a political system, a social club, or a building made of stone and mortar. It is God's divine plan for His people, birthed in the heart of Christ before the foundation of the world. Jesus did not say, "You will build My Church." He said, "I will build My Church." This truth is liberating. The success of the Church does not ultimately depend on human wisdom, charismatic leaders, or worldly strategies. While God uses men and women as vessels, the true Builder is Christ Himself. He is both the foundation and the architect, and what He builds cannot fail. The Promise of Victory Jesus added a promise that resonates through the ages: "The gates of hell shall not prevail against it." Gates are defensive structures, not offensive weapons. In other words, hell cannot stop the advance of the Church. The Church was meant to move forward, to invade darkness with light, and to proclaim liberty where there is bondage. Persecution, political oppression, or cultural rejection cannot erase it. From the early believers in the Roman Empire to underground churches today, the Church has continued to grow because it carries divine life. Why This Book? The phrase "I will build My Church" is not just a historical declaration-it is a living reality unfolding in our generation. Yet many today misunderstand what the Church is. Some see it as a Sunday service, others as a denomination, and still others as a powerless institution with little relevance. But Jesus' vision was far greater: a vibrant, Spirit-filled body that reveals His Kingdom on earth. This book seeks to rediscover the heart of Jesus for His Church. Together, we will explore its foundation, mission, power, and destiny. We will see how ordinary believers are called to be "living stones" in God's spiritual house, how the Church is to shine in the world, and how it is being prepared as a glorious Bride for Christ's return. An Invitation As you read these pages, remember that this is not just about the Church in a general sense-it is about you. You are part of the building Christ is raising. You are a living stone in His temple. You are part of the victorious body against which the gates of hell cannot prevail. Christ is still building His Church today. The question is not whether His promise will be fulfilled-it surely will. The question is: Will you be a part of what He is building?
