Before there were centralized school districts, before there was district-wide busing, children in the outlying areas of Southeast were educated in one room school houses scattered throughout the area. In these schoolhouses, there was often one teacher educating several students of different grade levels all in one room! They were heated by wood-stove when it got chilly in the winter, and children would go to a water pump nearby for fresh water. This is a story about one of these schoolhouses, and one teacher who made a difference.
