To avoid the fatal impact of a head-on collision in space, the TARDIS materialises on board an alien spacecraft. Currently in orbit around Earth, the space liner seems eerily deserted. Meanwhile, on Earth, schoolboy Turlough has an encounter with a mysterious stranger - the Black Guardian. He is determined to wreak revenge upon the Doctor, and Turlough will be his executor.
