The Great Artist The Emperor of China heard about this great artist, who was well conversant with grandiose ink drawings of birds. So, he allowed him to come and ordered him to draw a rooster, for the Emperor loved roosters above everything else. The artist could not let anyone know about him for more than a year. However, the Emperor sent for him, but his ambassadors were not allowed to get in. "It will take some time," the artist pointed out. The same happened in the second year. Nonetheless, after three years, the Emperor lost his patience and appeared with his entourage outside the artist's house. He led him in, placed a large sheet in front of the Emperor, and with a few bold strokes, drew a beautiful rooster. The Emperor was enthusiastic, but he was angry at the high price. "How can you ask for so much money for a drawing you have made in a few minutes before my eyes on the paper?" he asked. Without uttering a word, the artist took him to a large room filled with sketches of wings, beaks, and heads of roosters. Then, he took him to a second room where there were hundreds of drawings with taps, and finally, to a third room, where the walls were full of sketches of roosters scratching the dung, fighting rivals, picking grains, or announcing the morning with their crows. There were taps in every movement and every position. "You see," said the artist, "the drawing that seemed so easy to draw cost me three years of work, three years of hard work to draw a tap in a few minutes."
