The Center is the best-kept secret in the United States. This secret division of the government operates completely outside US law-and even outside common decency. The group is obsessed with developing psychic spies, and they don't care whether they ruin lives in the process. Former marine Chance Bartlett is one of these psychic spies in training. At the Center, he hones his abilities and learns to travel through the spirit realms. He also uncovers the organization's most terrible secret. Chance is there willingly, but the top-secret project Angel Child isn't waiting for volunteers. Instead, the Center kidnaps children and tests them for psychic potential. Those who show promise are trained as soldiers. Those who don't are sold into sexual slavery. Horrified at his discovery, Chance flees the Center and hides out at a remote Native American reservation. He can't, however, hide from his shame at having abandoned those children to their hideous fate. So when the father of one of the missing children begs for his help, Chance can't say no. Now Chance will have to draw upon all of his psychic training and abilities if he wants to save little Addie-and take down the Center for good.
