William Holden was one of the most popular movie stars ever, respected by critics and directors, and one of the biggest box office draws of the 1950s. His first major role - and the title role - was in ''Golden Boy, '' opposite Barbara Stanwyck, in 1939. His performance instantly established as star. During a 40-year career, he starred in more than 70 movies, winning an Oscar for his role in 1953's "Stalag 17."
