In this story; Jessie has just been freed from slavery, but unlike most of the other slaves, he decides to stay on with his former masters and sharecrop the land he once was forced to work. But now, with the promise of of a future, he decides to compete with his white counterparts in a marketplace unaccustomed to black businessmen. As a result of the pressures, Jessie takes shortcuts in production which results in grave consequences.
