"The Borking Rebellion" by Jeffrey Lord is the story of America's first failed "borking." Judge D. Brooks Smith was considered by many of his peers and the attorneys who practiced before him to be of "sterling" integrity. Serving as the Chief Judge of Pennsylvania's Western District Federal Court, Smith was nominated in 2001 by President George W. Bush. However, despite his sterling reputation, powerful special interest groups in Washington went to work in an organized campaign to destroy the Judge's nomination. However, the author, along with a group of Pennsylvania women attorneys organized a grass-roots fight against the special interests and took on the entire U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. In the end, they WON. Brooks was confirmed and installed to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. "Rebellion" is an incredible story of how individuals CAN make a difference when they stand up and fight.
