"In this brief but staggering two-act, playwright Bruce Norris demonstrates his ability to draw out the dark truth lurking beneath the illusion of the perfect family. His crackling satire takes dead aim at self-satisfied, left-leaning, upper-middle-class Americans and their many self-delusions. On a winter afternoon, Kelly and Clay -- an attractive, prosperous couple with a four-year-old daughter and a newborn baby -- must explain to a visitor the events of the previous Thanksgiving, which then unfold before the audience. It begins with the realization that someone or something has been gnawing at the avocados on their kitchen table. During the holiday gathering with extended family, their daughter's nasty genital itch serves as a catalyst to reveal uncomfortable truths, including fraternal hatred, infidelity, a failed marriage, and venereal disease. As the story is narrated to their visitor, his relationship to the events becomes clear -- as does the emptiness of the family's supposed benevolence and sensitivity. Did we mention that it's a comedy?" --
