In a Mexico of the past, Antonito, a peasant boy, sneaks out of the house one night along with his burro and rooster to see a fiesta for the first time. They watch as well-dressed families in elegant coaches arrive. In one sits a girl about Antonito's age. She smiles at him warmly, but her parents are not amused. At the fiesta, Antonio searches for the girl, but she is nowhere to be seen. The music, fireworks excite all, and the crowd dances to exhaustion. Antonito at first thrilled, slumps in disappointment at the girl's departure. With the fiesta over, the threesome head home. Exhausted, they fall asleep in a haystack just outside pueblo. Antonito dreams of a much better fiesta, one in which he is handsomely dressed and dances with the girl. But things change quickly as the crowd turns into monsters and chase him out of town. He wakes up in the midst of a storm racked by flooding waters and almost lose poor rooster. The three race for home in a thunderstorm, lightening crackling all around. They make a final leap over the fence into Antonito's yard. The animals dash for the safety of the barn, and Antonito darts into his worried mother's arms.
