Though thirty years old he went to Heidelberg, and there tried to make all reparation possible in his frag mentary education, and to extend his literary acquaint ance and horizon. After two semesters in Heidelberg he removed to Berlin where, after one year, his stipend ceased and he repeated here for the next four years (18 5 1 - 18 5 5) his starvation experiences of Munich. Yet during this period the best works of his early career were written, and many of those of his later years conceived and partly worked out.
