The Norns are unable to reassure Who Ever He Was about whether or not he has truly impregnated Eve. Nina Valentine, Who's girlfriend, loses her dog Hill, to a lacerated throat in Washington. After the funeral, Who helps Nina get a job as a waitress at the Hartford Lodge he manages in Oregon. Bill, Nina's new supervisor, sexually harasses her, eventually quitting when Stephanie, their boss, believes and protects Nina from him. In the trailer where they sleep, Who awakens to a bullet shattering the glass window in their door.
