Recess Explorers shows reality versus imagination in kids during recess at the playground. The reality is not particularly scary or unhappy, kids are still enjoying playing at the playground. However, reality may seem boring and repetitive when compared to the imagination. This book captures this moment in a young kid's life when things are fun and free. The book opens with a map showing the layout of the playground. Following that, the pages switch between the reality of kids playing on specific playground equipment and what the kid or kids are doing in their imagination. Flipping between the pages, the placement of the kid on the page and their pose stays the same, but their environment and their outfit changes. We get a glimpse inside the kid's heads as they play. There are vast worlds in this book. Half of the book shows the world of reality on the playground. In the background of many of the playground images, other kids can be seen playing. The other half of the book shows the world of imagination, what these kids see themselves doing as they play. Many things are happening in the imagination images, some that would seem normal and others that may seem unusual. Recess Explorers shows the whimsical imagination of kids. Anything can happen, you can be anything and go anywhere. The possibilities are endless. Even the seemingly normal imaginations, like the kid in the jungle, hide exciting surprises like pretzel bushes and donut flowers.
