B ▶ 탬벌레인 대왕(Tamburlaine the Great)은 누구?! : 대체 작품의 제목인 탬벌레인 대왕이 대체 누군지 생소하시겠지만 이는 티무르 제국의 제왕 티무르 베그 구르카니(Amir Temur ko'ragoniy ibn Amir Tarag'ay ibn Amir Burqul, 1336~1405), 일명 티무르(Temur)의 영어식 표기입니다. 당시 유럽인, 특히 이슬람과 인접한 동유럽 국가는 몽골 제국의 침략을 극도로 두려워하였는데, 그들의 침략으로부터 안전한 영국인(몽골인은 바다를 건너지 않았으므로)이 ‘양치기로 태어나 제왕의 자리에 오른 티무르의 업적’을 드라마틱하게 구성한 극본에 열광하였다는 것은 흥미로운 대목입니다. 아마도 영국에서는 상상하기 힘든 중앙아시아의 대평원이 주는 이국적인 풍광과 낯선 캐릭터가 대중들의 판타지를 자극하였을 것입니다. ▶ TO THE GENTLEMEN-READERS AND OTHERS THAT TAKE PLEASURE. My hope is, that they will be now no less acceptable unto you to read after your serious affairs and studies than they have been lately delightful for many of you to see when the same were shewed in London upon stages.
