Understanding temae through a comparison of forty-four schools
More than four hundred years have passed since Sen Rikyū brought chanoyu to maturity. During this time, many tea masters appeared, and several schools founded by them have been handed down to the present day. Because practitioners of chanoyu usually belong to a single school, they are often surprised when they encounter the distinctive teachings and procedures of other traditions. This book examines the temae procedures of forty-four schools of chanoyu. By objectively evaluating the differences in their procedures and clarifying the relationships among the schools, it explores how temae has changed from the time of Sen Rikyū to the present.
