Seventeen-year-old Hummingbird Windsor should have known that stealing glitzy clothing in exchange for protection from an ex-boyfriend/bully wasn't a smart move. Now in trouble with the law, the court sends her to live with her estranged father in the fictional town of Bellesport, Maine, where she's assigned to volunteer on the locked memory care unit on which her grandmother, Sukie, has recently been placed. She meets Elliot, the bright, witty rehab patient, to whom she's dangerously attracted. It's only after Hummingbird witnesses Sukie being bullied that she comes to terms with the devastation caused by her own bullying. Tragedy ensues. Hummingbird learns that loss is never total; that misplaced trust can be overshadowed by the warmth of unexpected friendship and the painfully won gain known as love.
