"Kandai The Elephant Goes Bananas" is a poem that tells a story of a baby elephant named Kandai, who lives in one of the elephant camps in Chiang Mai, Thailand. One day, the Mahout (elephant trainer and care-taker) takes Kandai on an adventure to the people's town. Kandai is amazed at all the different types of bananas that he loves to eat. He also discovers the usefulness of the entire banana plant, not just the fruit. He sees how Ms. Kaali, the orchard owner, uses the entire plant and transforms the banana plant into many wonderful things. Children will enjoy reading poems that are supplemented by hand-painted illustrations that depict the events happening at the farm between Kandai, the mahout, Mrs. Kaali, the silly monkey, and the many types of farm animals. This book contains Teaching Tools and questions for teachers in the classroom or parents. Children will learn about the different uses of bananas that are not utilized in the United States. This book has tremendous educational appeal. It ends with some Talking Points and Teaching Tools for further discussion in the classroom setting. This book is the second book of the "Kandai the Elephant" series. Children are encouraged to read "Having Fun With Kandai The Elephant" to learn more about Kandai and understand the intelligence of the Asian elephant.
