ウィリアム・マーティン・ジョエル は、アメリカのニューヨーク州サウス・ブロンクス出身のシンガーソングライター、歌手、ピアニスト、作曲家。ポップなメロディと、都会的なアダルト・コンテンポラリー・サウンドで、1970年代後半から1990年代前半にかけてヒットを連発した。全世界で1億5000万枚以上のレコード・セールスを記録している。代表曲に、「ピアノ・マン」、「素顔のままで」、「アップタウン・ガール」、「ストレンジャー」、「オネスティ」などがある。イギリスのエルトン・ジョンと共に、20世紀後半〜21世紀前半、ピアノ・ロックというジャンルを確立した。
