For the most part, the videos supporting it honor the record’s adventurousness, and they’re the most compelling reasons to check out this tape. Achtung Baby: The Videos, The Cameos and a Whole Lot of Interference from Zoo TV opens with a capsule history of the band, ending with lead singer Bono telling a concert audience that the group is off ”to dream the whole thing up again.” Dream they did: ”Mysterious Ways” is a lush Moroccan hallucination, ”The Fly” is genuinely ominous, and the Kevin Godley-helmed ”Even Better Than the Real Thing,” with its incredible gymnastic camera moves and provocative, blink-and-you-miss-it montages, is about as close to perfection as music clips get. Unfortunately, the interview sections are a bit wearing, mainly because Bono’s new, flip persona is even more obnoxious than his old Mr. Painful Sincerity pose. While the tape is filled out with some gratuitous alternate videos, the good stuff here is undeniable.
